firemans05_20074.jpgfiremans05_20074.jpgI hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July weekend.  Although it has been a month since the site has been updated, I assure you it is only because we have been extremely busy.  I will be posting our 44 Core player of the month shortly, as well as posting pictures of our hats and shirt designs for everyone to take a vote on which ones they think are the best.  Everyone at 44 Core has been busy with editing and hope to have an update for all the 44 Core members soon.  Being July, coreball.jpg everyone of you have been busy getting your births and playing as much ball as possible.  I myself have only made it two  tournaments this year, but appreciate all the invites to tournaments I have received thus far  Since we are in post production of 44 Core, it is hard to leave the editing room to accommodate some of your requests.  Till then, keep checking the site, we are preparing to announce some big news.

44 Core player of the month for May MARK KEENER
Written by rthornton

Mark Keener got into softball as a dependant on military  bases, shotcaller1.jpgthen when he was in the military himself.  A player from 1977 to 1993.  After doctors told him he could not play anymore due to an injury, Mark’s love for the game could not be deterred, so what did this 45 year old father of two do?  He became an umpire.   Yep, our 44 Core player of the month is a member of a group most of you love to hate.  So what kind of stats does Mark bring to the table as an umpire?  15,531 games umpired, 46 world or super world series, 19 states and 2 countries and at least one world in every class of adult slow pitch. In 2002 he was the only US umpire invited up to do the Canadian Co-Ed World Series in Calgary Canada. He has umpired in every association, and currently he calls NSA, ISA and WSL/ASA. Off the fields Mark is a warehouse supervisor for a major carpet/hard surfaces distributor. Living in Hudson, Florida offers year round opportunities.  Pretty cool to be around the game all year. 2005_0821image0023.jpg
Mark does have his share of horror stories.  “While I was umpiring a single man tourney 8 years ago I was running down the baseline to see the play and for the first time in history I was on the outside of the lines and the runner threw his bat towards his dugout, unfortunately it hit me in the jaw.  I woke up in the ambulance on the way to the hospital where they had to surgically remove all my upper teeth and most of my lower ones. I was out for 4 months and now wear a full upper plate an a partial bottom one. When I got back to umping the first team of the day was the one with the guy who threw the bat.  He kept apologizing and I told him I was in the wrong place, normally I run down the line inside the bases but for some reason I was outside for the first time.” That would have been the end it for me, but Mark is still going strong.  “Thank God umpires have great insurance is all I have to say”  Well done Mark, we know you’ll keep going strong!

GAS....$2.79 A gallon from Kansas City to Sioux City Iowa for the Sioux City NIT.

ER CHARGES... $1790.00

Standing ovation and another picture on the 44 Core Website...Priceless.shot_to_the_head_2_001.jpg

Maybe You all remember Carter Morrison, our March 44 Core Player of the month.  I went to watch the Sioux City NIT May 6th.  I thought this would be a good chance for me to catch up on some of the guys we followed last year.  RTS Crew is now RTS Power.  It was really great to see a bunch of the guys we got to know last year, and watch a few of the great teams that are making a run for the championships.  The game between RTS Power and Hooters/Easton will be one that will always stick in my mind.  After being down 13 runs, RTS power was making a come back in the 7th inning.  Carter up at bat, a guy on third, and only 5 runs down, Carter hits it towards the first baseman.  Carter is pretty fast, so the odds of him beating the tag were pretty good.  With a few steps short of the bag, the first baseman tags Carter out, and then throws it hard to home...or at least that's how it looked.  Turns out the balls hits Carter square in the head.  The worst sounding “THUNK” I’ve ever heard.  The crowd stood up and called for the first baseman's blood while Carter lay on the field in pain.  In 12 years of softball I’ve never seen a runner going to 1st, getting hit by the throw from first.  To me it was a worthless throw considering the guy was sliding home before the ball even left the first baseman's hand.  But what was most important was Carter’s condition.  I was terrified he was hit in the face.  Turns out, Carter being a short fellow, got hit in the head.  After about 15 minutes on the ground, his team mates attempted to get Carter up.  Hooters started clapping for him, then Carter went back down.  Another 5 minutes later and Carter was helped to the dugout.  To a great standing ovation.  RTS made a great come back, being down three, two outs, two  men on base, but the final play sealed the deal and Hooters walked away to take third, behind first place Sidewinder and T’s 13.  With the help of his team mates Carter will live to play another day.  And he got not one but two standing ovations.  He sent me this picture of his face two days later.  Now a question for you...have you ever seen a hit like this?
