Shawnee Shoot-out Kansas City
Written by rthornton

June 19th and 44 Core was at the Shawnee Shoot-out NIT in Kansas City.  The Mid-America complex put on a great tournament and I thought the watermelon was a great touch.  The umpire let us have unprecedented access to the field, allowing us to film up close and personal.
One of the questions I have been asked is how softball can be more participant and fan friendly.  Unlike most sports that last 2-3 hours, softball tournaments, like this past one lasted over 14 hours.  It’s grueling for both players and their fans and families alike.  But I think that is also what makes softball such a unique sport.  Most softball complexes we have visited have playgrounds for kids and PJ’s in Spring Texas had a nice little game gallery with video games and pinball.  Addition little touches like the watermelon is a great idea.   Any suggestions anyone has on how this question can be answered let me know.
RTS Crew won a hard fought tournament, and the 14 hours were made up for by extremely competitive games and a touch a flair here and there.  I am amazed at the tolerance the umpires showed under what I thought were major pressure and high heat from the field and the sun.
Midwest Mowing placed second, in two of the longest games I’ve seen played in a while.  Both still 7 innings.
For All of those who noticed the big dent in the equipment shed behind field #1 can all high five Nick Sailors for his line drive smash.  The hardest hit ball in the tournament.

 Minute Maid Statium, Houston, TX
June 10-12 found 44 Core at Houston Texas at Minute Maid Statium.  The Longhaul Bombers were having their homerun contest and we were front and center.  And when I say front and center, I mean we were at home plate, on the field talking to the Houston Astros in their dugout!  And I have to tell you, the Astros were just as impressed with the Bombers as I was.

All the Longhaul Bombers were exceptionally nice.  Honestly, I'm not just saying that.  All the stuff I have read and heard about these guys being unavaliable, stuck up, and nothing but show was definately not the case.

Rena & Rusty Bumgarner at The Bus in downtown Houston,TX

Yes, when they showed up at the softball field at the Houston Astros classic in Spring Texas, they certinally had celebrity status and were not able to walk a few steps without being bombarded with handshakes, high fives and questions.  But at no time did any of these guys brush any of it off.  Almost to the point of missing their flights.

Rusty Bumgarner after his hitting display at Minute Maid gave me the shirt off his back, literaly!  We are going to use it for a contest later, but I did'nt even ask.  Then him and Johnny McCrawl spent the next two days making me laugh and feel welcome no matter where we were, with and without our cameras.  After the weekend, I felt as if I had been their friend for years.

Check out all of our pictures from Houston, TX in the photo gallery!

"Hats off to the Producer"

I've had some people question my choice of hats when we are at different shoots.  So now I've come up the "Hats off to the Producer" program. Here's how it works.  Send me one of your team hats, and I know how prized they are to each team.  But I will wear a different hat to each shoot and tell a bit about what team and from what state it came from.  Let's see how many teams from different states we can get involved.  I think it will give the viewing audience a good idea how many teams really play this game.

For all the fitted hats, I wear a 7 1/8.  Along with your team hat, also include a picture of your team, the state you play in and what divsion.  Leave your name and e-mail address and we will post your picture on our site and show which days and where I wore that hat.
Rena Thornton  1001 Fort Crook Road N. Suite 221, Bellevue, Ne 68005.  Include an e-mail address and I will e-mail you when I receive it.

Thanks!  Let’s get more teams recognized, even if it is their hats right now.

Till next time, Rena
